Case Observation

I had the great privilege last week of having two surgeons observe one of my endometriosis surgeries. One was from St. Louis and the other from Chicago.  They were both experienced minimally invasive surgeons but are trying to improve their knowledge of endometriosis surgery.  Very fun to share our individual experiences with this complex disease.

Endometriosis Foundation's Fourth Annual Symposium

I am in New York City and will be attending the Endometriosis Foundation's Fourth Annual Symposium. I am tremendously excited about this. As anyone who treats patients with endometriosis knows (and anyone with endometriosis knows even better), the management of this complicated condition is a moving target. The program will focus both on the importance of meticulous surgical technique to excise the endometriosis lesions and medical management. There will also presentations about the most cutting edge research relating to the pathophysiology of endometriosis. I'll update more after the conference.

I was informed yesterday that I have performed more robotic endometriosis resection surgeries than any other gynecologic surgeon in the state of Minnesota. I will be presenting and hosting a film review next Wednesday with my partner Dr. Eric English for other gynecologic surgeons about Chronic Pelvic Pain. This is entitled " Chronic Pelvic Pain: The Selection and Management of Surgical Candidates." The use of robotic technology has revolutionized the treatment of this dreadful condition.

American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists

I returned from a fabulous meeting of the AAGL in Miami a couple weeks ago. There are always a vast number of topics to learn about but I concentrated on endometriosis. One the most poignant parts of the conference when was Padma Laksmi of Top Chef fame discussed her almost 20 year battle with endometriosis and the profound impact on her life. What a frustrating , mysterious disease endometriosis is. I was disappointed somewhat that there is not more headway on understanding the underlying cause. It is a combination of hereditary predisposition plus a multitude of other participating factors. The main message was that the treatment is surgical and it is SO important to treat it aggressively and to excise all implants as early as possible and then suppress the disease medically. As we all know, symptoms present often times in adolescence and are often dismissed by medical providers. Lets get the word out about the importance of evaluation in teens with painful periods so that the condition can be managed in the early stage and hopefully contained before the devastating side effects occur.

Presentation at the Excellence In Robotics Meeting

I recently had the privilege to be one of the first speakers at the newly formed Minnesota Robotic Excellence group. I presented my experience using the CO2 Laser along with the Da Vinci Robot. I have found this to be an excellent tool to have at my disposal when resecting deep endometriosis, or taking down adhesions. This is a portion of the video I presented. This shows the laser being used to ablate the diffuse, gelatinous endometriosis covering the ovaries. Note how the laser can be used almost like a paint brush to delicately and completely remove the endometriosis.
